It's no secret that I suffer from anxiety. I've come a long way in the 2 years I've had it, but it wasn't easy. When I first started having anxiety attacks I had no idea how to control it and never felt calm outside of my house. Slowly after seeing a therapist, I learned to cope with it. Something that people never tell you about anxiety is that it doesn't go away, you just learn to live with it. However, for me, the day-to-day struggle has been extremely hard some days. In all honesty, there are days that leaving your house feels like the hardest thing in the world. Something that has helped me manage my anxiety tremendously is the adaptogen and herb Ashwagandha.
Now in all honestly, I was terrified of Ashwagandha when I first heard about it. I thought I couldn't trust it and I didn't know anything about it. However, I kept hearing people talk about it and feeling so much better taking it and so I decided to learn more about it and I want to share that with you:
- What is Ashwagandha? Ashwagandha is an ayuverdic herb described as an adaptogen. It has been used for over 5000 years to combat stress.
- What does it do? It calms your nervous system allowing you to relax. It can also help combat fatigue, joint pain, poor memory and concentration. Additionally, it is great for the immune system and can help your body fight viruses and infections.
The final myth that I needed to debunk about Ashwagandha and what frightened me the most about taking it, was the effect it had on your thyroid health. I have hypo-thyroidism and it has taken me a long time to stabilize my condition and I didn't want anything to impact that. The more I read the more I realized that as long as I wasn't using it to treat my condition, I would be just fine.
Ashwagandha comes in so many forms, but my favourite is powder. You can add it to your coffee or tea daily. Right now, I'm addicted to the Botanica Health Chocolate Tumeric Golden Mylk. It tastes pretty much like hot chocolate, but it already has Ashwagandha mixed into it! I just add it to warm almond milk before bed and it is the perfect night cap.
How do I use Ashwagandha? I want to preface this by saying that it is an adaptogen, which means it is in a way medicinal. Therefore, I don't recommend taking it daily. I take it on days I know I am feeling especially stressed or nervous, days where I'm not well rested (a huge cause of my anxiety), or even sometimes days where all of a sudden I am feeling onset anxiety from no where. It has been a tremendous help day to day and helped me feel a lot less stressed on a daily basis. I honestly used to be so anxious about the possibility of getting anxious. Now that I have started taking Ashwagandha, I don't feel that way because I know I have a solution.
I can honestly say, that had it not been for Ashwagandha, I would not have moved past my anxiety and learned to cope as well as I have today.
If you do have more questions, feel free to contact me and I'd be happy to help! Anxiety isn't easy and I'm not here to judge, I'm here to listen.
